Love is Alchemy

I am a hummingbird, my best friend’s a caterpillar. I pursue my heart’s desire, I met him pollinating a flower. He ate the leaves as I sucked the nectar of sweet bliss. “I love your wings, they flap so fast they’re hardly seen,” he said to me. I responded, “I’m so high off life, I’m tweaking all the time. The roses are sweet they’re impossible to resist. I’m an addict, I live to love life.” “Well, I wish I flew,” the caterpillar said to me, “But I must learn alchemy if I want wings.” I told him I heard the heart is where the gold is. “No,” the caterpillar said to me, “Life’s supposed to teach me. It owes that much to me.” “Life owes you nothing,” I responded, “just follow your heart and be true to who you’re meant to be.” But he never listened to me.

I am a caterpillar, my best friend died today. He was a hummingbird, the greatest I’d ever seen. He was as sweet as the roses he couldn’t resist. But now I’m lonely, and the pain’s too much for me. I eat my emotions. Without him, I live in grief, and I’m too scared that death may choose me.

I am the Sun, the caterpillar is my son. I love him, but he denies my light and prefers the dark. I will always love him even though he says, “I don’t want you! I want the hummingbird, my best friend.” He pretends my love’s not there, covers in dark the light I share. He says to me, “I want to die! It isn’t fair.” He’s made fear his new best friend. I told him to trust me, that he will learn alchemy, just don’t live with fear, gold glistens incandescent under my sunrays.

My name is Fear, the caterpillar is a friend. I spun a cloak he calls his cocoon to make him invisible so the world doesn’t get to him. And now I rule his world. I lie to him and say he’s the greatest I’ve ever seen. In his world of fantasy he’s the greatest actor ever lived and I applaud him for acting out his dream. He loves the cocoon I spun for him, he calls it his strongest suit. It helps him better survive, though, he’s alienated from the world. I tell him, “Outside your cocoon, is that world too cruel that took your best friend, so stay in your fantasy, this cocoon and me are your everything.”

I am a boy, my name is Ted. I got to live another day. I saw a butterfly, it learned alchemy it said. “It’s how I got my wings. I got sick of living cocooned by fear, the cocoon he made me was consistently in disrepair. And if you want, I’ll tell you the secret to alchemy so everyday is a brand new day. Look at the sun, its golden rays, they are love, and a hummingbird was my best friend. He was an addict of sweet roses and lived in pursuit of his true heart’s bliss. He always tweaked off life and told me to love life.” But I said to the caterpillar, “That doesn’t say what the secret to alchemy is. You have a golden pair of wings that glisten incandescent under the sunrays.” The caterpillar said, “I’m blind to color, I don’t know what you see, but when I see you, Ted, I see a heart of gold and that’s the start of alchemy if you want to learn.”

I am Earth and I am love. And everyday millions are born, live and die. They’re all my children, but some never give or get love. The secret to life is my Nature, I never rush and my job is never done. If I could ask one thing of my children it is to master love. And that the thing called alchemy is not how to make gold from nothing, but transform love from everything.

My name is God, I am the beginning, the middle and the end, and as it is above so it is below, as the pendulum swings forward it swings back, I am the law of correspondence and what is hot and what is cold, and nothing and everything. Love your greatest fear and fear your greatest love, for love requires fear to know in reality you are loved. I love you.
